According to dictionary definitions, “Surrounding” carries the meanings of fabric units, wrapping, and bundling, while “circling” refers to moving around in loops or intertwining. “Surrounding” thus becomes a working scenario, especially reflecting the movements of an artist’s hands. This concept represents a distinctive creative approach recently developed by artist Tseng Yen-Yu, integrating textile art, sculpture, and puppetry. Through the use of fine stitching, she shapes discarded garments of various materials into three-dimensional human and circular forms. Within the emotional atmosphere of objects, her works suggest the interrelationships between human society and the natural environment.

Tseng Yen-Yu uses discarded clothing and textile remnants as her primary materials, practicing her art through deconstruction and reassembly. Guided by intuitive handwork, she gives new life to materials and establishes new forms for old objects. The use of discarded garments and local fibers serves as an extension of geographic coordinates and historical narratives, reflecting cultural styles and cycles of environmental sustainability. Her work becomes a means of experience, communication, and contemplation—building connections with the environment while weaving together memory, history, and storytelling.
