Many people are familiar with the saying, “Because of innovation, it becomes classic.” But under what circumstances can something truly be called innovation, and what exactly does “classic” mean? Innovation refers to making new changes to existing things, while a classic is something with a clear position and strong representativeness. Classics are often distinctive and unique. All people and things regarded as classics also demonstrate a considerable degree of innovation. Not only do they offer new perspectives and choices, they can even inspire unprecedented energy. Now, let us embark on this artistic journey by exploring the innovative thinking behind the classic works of four influential twentieth-century artists with distinct styles yet equally significant status: Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian, and Zao Wou-Ki. Through observing their artistic concepts, themes, use of color, and techniques, we are invited to step into their classics shaped by innovative thinking.
